Saturday June 24, 2017 : Midsummer Sounds

Organization: het Marca (Community Centre Maarkedal)
Place: Maarkedal,  Hofke Ter Musse - Sint Britiuskerk Etikhove - O.-L.-V.-La Salettekerk in Louise Marie

MIDSUMMER SOUNDS is a new festival for which AQUARIUS not only performs but is also responsible for choosing the programme.

Year 2 builds on the successful formula of last year: music in 3 locations, a short stroll from one location to the other, and, in between, tasty snacks.

We are delighted to be able to offer you “Die Winterreise” by Franz Schubert with Klemens Sander, accompanied by Cristian Peix. This concert will take place at 16h45 in Sint-Britiuskerk in Etikhove.

The Flemish early music ensemble “Il Nostromo del Sogno” will interpret “A chantar m'er” at 14h00 in Hofke ter Musse – a programme of troubadour music on the theme of courtly love. Truly a statement in these times.

AQUARIUS, like last year, will provide the evening concert at 21h00 in the church of Louise-Parie with a programme on a theme that has for some time engendered much cultural interest: the world famous retable of the Lamb of God by the Van Eyck brothers. “Music for the Mystic Lamb” focuses attention on the individual panels of this retable, providing for each a musical illustration that takes the listener on a journey through the history of Western classical music from Gregorian chant to the 20 th century Polish composer Gorecki. We are professionally guided on this journey by the Lamb of God expert par excellence Peter Schmidt. He will explain the religious background of the pictures and it was he who, as a passionate lover of music, chose the music for each panel. You will be in good hands.

Friday April 21 – Sunday April 23, 2017: AQUARIUS' Russian weekend

organization: B-classic, as part of the Russian soul Pressure cooking festival 2017

place: Tongeren - Borgloon

Russia stands central in the Festival of Flanders –Tongeren this year, and the 2017 edition promises to be as dynamic as always.

During this festival week, AQUARIUS will offer you a weekend full of Russian music. A special feature of this festival is that the music will be brought to life on location.

The festival will open in the atmospheric Tongeren Casino on Friday April 21, at 8pm, and the concert will feature a choral work by one of the most Russian of Russians, GEORGI SVIRIDOV (1915-98): “3 choruses on texts by Russian Poets” (1958).

At dawn on Saturday April 22, in a provisionally secret location, comes the concert 'Awakening Silence', during which AQUARIUS will sing a selection of music from its a capella Arvo Pärt CD, MAGNIFICENT MAGNIFICAT. Isn't Pärt Estonian?! Estonia was governed by Russian 40 years ago; many Russians still live there, and Russian is the second language. But Pärt is no Russian.

After a restorative siesta, the evening concert 'Russian Salon' will follow – once again in the Tongeren Casino. AQUARIUS will perform the first part of the illustrious 'Concerto for Choir' (1988) by ALFRED SCHNITTKE (1934-1998), and three of the “Ten Choruses on Texts by Revolutionary Poets” (1951) by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). Schnittke has been called the heir to Shostakovich' throne. Both composers were both praised and muzzled by the political system. Both composed music that has brilliantly survived the system. The system has collapsed. The recognition of their greatness continues to rise.

On Sunday April 23 – still the Lord's day in this country – AQUARIUS will sing a fourth concert at  bicycle stops in the journey VELO 3840, in the sober Saint Adolph's Church in Borgloon at 5pm. AQUARIUS will perform a large part of the 'Vespers' (1910 – also known as the Night Vigil) by Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943). It is music to die for. It is many miles away from our own, Western, church music. Rachmaninov was a great artist. The music is melodious and compelling. The Slav language itself is already music. Music that transports and entrances is so welcome in these difficult times.

Organization: het Marca (Cultural Centre Maarkedal)

Location: CC het Marca (formerly Sint Eligius Church), Maarkeweg 65A, 9680 Maarkedal

Following the big impression that Aquarius made with Arvo Pärt's Kanon Pokajanen in Maarkedal in October 2015, the choir comes back with a miscellany of choral music from this Estonian composer. For the past four years, Pärt has been the most performed contemporary composer of classical music. His music is restful and searching: food for the doubter and the 'new' believer, who wants to embrace something that transcends the visible and the material. In five languages and through five different atmospheres Arvo Pärt bears witness to his great belief, with a unique voice that binds him to so many listeners.

This concert brings to an end the first edition of the new festival MIDSUMMER SOUNDS that Maarkedal organizes, and of which Marc Michael De Smet is the curator.

At 2.30pm, the Flemish ensemble Ardalus, under the direction of Karen Ketels, will perform a programme around the 'master thief' Jacob Van Eyck, and at 5pm the celebrated Parisian duo Cathérine Braslavsky – Joseph Rowe will perform their enchanting Hildegard von Bingen programme.

Tuesday October 27, 2015 at 8 pm: Let the people dance – Kristiaan's Wannes

Organization : CCHA Hasselt Cultural Centre

Place: Hasselt Cultural Centre, Kunstlaan 5, 3500 Hasselt

The Flemish folksinger, Wannes van de Velde (1937 – 2008) did not only draw for his repertoire on old songbooks; he also wrote his own songs, sometimes containing biting social criticism. AQUARIUS asked the composer Kristiaan Van Ingelgem to arrange a broad selection of his songs for a cappella choir. 'Let the people dance' (it continues: 'they have so little chance!') portrays and summarizes our contemporary human condition, in both a high-spirited and a beseeching way.

Friday October 2, 2015 at 8.15 pm: A portrait of the world in 21 songs

Openings Concert for the 13th International Choir Competition of Flanders – Maasmechelen

Organization: IKV Maasmechelen

Place: Sint-Barbarakerk Eisden-Tuinwijk, Kastanjelaan, 3630 Maasmechelen

Western classical music acts, through the ages, like a mirror: reflecting the time in which it was written. And times change: a great deal, and always at a faster rate. What is reflected in the mirror changes all the time. We saunter through a musical gallery that we call 'the past' and get lost in a multitude of colours, forms, atmospheres and stories. We raise our hat to numerous geniuses. Just when we think that we have heard everything, our contemporaries surprise us with new colours, forms, atmospheres and stories.

AQUARIUS takes you by the hand, across the ages, and brings you safely back – enriched by emotion and discovery. At every bend in the road an 'ah', an 'oh'. A portrait of the world … as it were. A pleasure trip that calms you and makes you cheer. By singers for singers.

Organization: AQUARIUS in collaboration with the Estonian Embassy

Place: The Protestant Chapel, Museumplein/Place du Musée 2, 1000 Brussels (www.eglisedumusee.be)

Arvo Pärt will be 80 years old on September 11th ! On this very day, his birthday, AQUARIUS presents its new cd devoted entirely to his works: 'Magnificent Magnificat'. In the Brussels' Protestant Chapel, this music, that is splendid and yet at the same time understated, can be heard to its best advantage. In five different languages and five contrasting atmospheres, Arvo Pärt bears witness to his faith, in the unique voice that has won him millions of listeners. AQUARIUS works in collaboration with the Estonian Embassy for this concert.

Arvo Pärt himslef listened and wrote about the cd:

Organization: cc Kruispunt, Diksmuide

Place: Sint-Niklaaskerk, Kiekenstraat , 8600 Diksmuide

The concert will open with a short performance by the children's choir of the SAMW 'Clemens non Papa', Diksmuide, and with an evocation of the Christmas Truce at the Ijzer by the Academy's drama.

AQUARIUS, the vocal ensemble 'Le Madrigal' from Lille, France, and instrument teachers from the SAMW 'Clemens non Papa' from Diksmuide perform the Belgian interpretation of 'The Armed Man – A Mass for Peace'. This piece will be preceded by three short choral works by West Flemish composers, representative of different generations: Roland Coryn (°1938), Petra Vermote (°1968) and Felix Vermeirsch (°1999). Each composer was asked to write a short composition on a text by one of the many War Poets. These texts have been magnificently recounted by the writer Tom Lanoye in his anthologies 'Niemandsland' and 'De groote oorlog'.

This event is part of GoneWest, the cultural commemoration of WWI organized by the Province of West Flanders.

Organization: Monastic

Location: Sint-Pauluskerk, Botermelkstraat 63, Aalst

AQUARIUS is well-known for combining the 'tried and tested' with the 'unknown and to be discovered'. Looking afresh at the Christmas theme is just such a typical challenge. AQUARIUS presents the legendary Ceremony of Carols by BENJAMIN, Lord BRITTEN - perhaps the greatest vocal composer of the 20ieth century. Supporting this work are two new compositions: CIRKELZANG ('CIRCULAR SONG') by KRISTIAAN VAN INGELGEM, and JAARRINGEN ('ANNUAL RINGS') by his son, MAARTEN VAN INGELGEM. These pieces are united under the intriguing title 'In Joyful Dismay' and the texts for both, which evoke pre-Christian Yuletide rituals, were written specially for AQUARIUS by the Flemish writer ANNIE VAN KEYMEULEN. All these works are for female chorus and harp, a blissful combination. Add to this many solos and a narrator, and all the conditions necessary for an evening full of poetry and entrancement are on hand. We look forward to seeing you there...

Tuesday 11 November, 2014 at 16:00: WREDE?!

Organization: Orfeoproducties

Place: Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-van-Lourdesbasiliek, Hovestraat ,  2650 Edegem

It is right that we should diligently commemorate the First World War. We keep ourselves informed, through books, films and art, about the Second World War, and other hotbeds of unrest in Ukraine, Syria or where ever, that proliferate even now as this concert begins, and may yet lead, who knows, to a Third World War.

What can the citizen do, other than be afraid, pray, and talk and sing about it? Not that it helps. Or does it? For ourselves, as comfort or exorcism; against the fear. 'Homo homini lupus est': we learnt it in secondary school. War and peace seem as interminable as each other, as irreversible and indisputable as ebb and flow.

In Wvrede!? (Peace? Or Cruelty...) AQUARIUS tries to set up a musical dialogue between an evocation of the horror and the call for peace. The music chosen comes from all different historical periods and is eternally relevant – just like war and peace. Perhaps we should keep silent, in all languages, for shame, but we cannot. That would be another kind of death. And so we sing, in all languages: violently, wailing our lament and with reverence. And you will applaud, in order to lighten your heart...

During the first half of the concert, drama teachers from the municipal Academy for Music and Drama (SAMW), Wilrijk (Edegem division), will introduce three essays that were given a prize in the essay competition held by Edegem schools linked to the theme 'conflicts'.

Tickets: € 15 (12 euro for +65 and members of Davidsfond); reservation via: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ou www.edegem.be/tickets

The lecture starts at 20:45 in order to allow people to go to the Last Post ceremony under the Menenpoort at 20:00.

Organization: Vlaams Vredesinstituut, Vredesstad Ieper and the in Flanders Fields-Museum

Place: cc Ieper - Het Perron, Fochlaan 1, 8900 Ieper

When AQUARIUS was invited by the the Flemish Peace Institute (an independant research institute within the Flemish Parliament) to be responsible for the artistic part of its yearly November 11th lecture, it did not need to think twice.

First, there is the formula: speakers from previous years, such as the Mayor of Hiroshima, the war correspondent Robert Fisk and the writer Erwin Mortier, have set the tone for a thorough and profound reflection. And then there is the location: Ieper is a town in the Westhoek, known, since the visit of Pope John Paul II, as 'Ypres, City of Peace'.

The November 11th Lecture, 2014, will be given by the eminent Jan Terlouw (°1931), former Dutch D66 politician (i.a. Minister for Economic Affairs and Vice Premier) and known to the general public as a writer of books for young people, who will shed light on the darker side of our civilization.

For AQUARIUS, singing provides a window to the world. A messy world. Homo homini lupus est.

Sunday 14th September, 2014 at 18:00: NO DIRECTION HOME – Songs of Imprisonment

Organisation: Historische huizen Gent – Sint-Pietersabdij

Place: Gravensteen, Gent

Only those from another planet could be unaware of the world-wide concern caused by the detention without trial of Islamic militants by the superpower, America. America, where the value of democracy and freedom of speech is nonetheless so strongly felt.

No solution has been found for this distressing situation. In their powerlessness, these detainees have resorted to the pen to give a voice to their degrading situation. It is poetry that comes from and fights against the horror.

For the outside world, these poems are to be found in an anthology in English translation: ‘Poems from Guantanamo’, published by University of Iowa Press, 2007.

The English composer Ed Hughes (°1968) (www.edhughes.org.uk) felt inspired to compose a substantial a cappella choral cycle entitled “A Buried Flame” comprising three poems from this collection and Psalm 69. This brought Aquarius to the decision to ask the New Zealand composer Anthony Ritchie (°1960) (http://www.anthonyritchie.co.nz/) also to write a choral cycle dedicated to a selection of these poems.

In this way, two composers with a very different style have been brought together, unanimous in their outrage at this excrescence of civilization.

Putting these two cycles on the concert agenda is an act of engagement and compassion on the part of AQUARIUS.

Where is the world to save us from torture?

Sunday December 1, 2013 at 16:00: IN BLIJDE VERBIJSTERING - REMEMBERING THE GREAT BRITTEN

Organiser: Rosario vzw

Place: Sint-Paulus church, Botermelkstraat 63, Aalst

On December 1st, the renewed version of our Christmas project will be premièred in Aalst. AQUARIUS will once again perform the legendary CEREMONY OF CAROLS by BENJAMIN, Lord BRITTEN – probably the greatest vocal composer of the 20th century – flanked by two new compositions: CIRKELZANG (‘Circular Song’) by KRISTIAAN VAN INGELHEM and JAARRINGEN (‘Annual Rings’) by his son MAARTEN VAN INGELHEM. The text of JAARRINGEN, which was specially written for AQUARIUS by the Flemish poet ANNIE VAN KEYMEULEN, evokes the pre-Christian Christmas tradition. These new compositions are also for female chorus and harp – a heavenly combination. Add to this numerous soli and a narrator and all the conditions for an evening full of poetry and entrancement are met. You are awaited…

Thurdsday 17 October 2013, 20:00: A MEETING WITH…

Organisation: Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts

Lociation: Throne Room of the Palace of the Academies, Rue Ducale 1, 1000 Brussels

On 17 October, 2013 we will finally arrive at the proud moment when we can present our new CD " A MEETING WITH..." dedicated to the English language choral works of the Flemish composer ROLAND CORYN (he will be 75 in December!) Although this is but a small part of his impressive oeuvre, we have worked hard to commit these 70 minutes to disc. The fruits of our labour will be presented in a concert in the stately setting of the Royal Academy in Brussels. Roland Coryn is a member of the Academy. As is the Flemish composer Lucien Posman, of whose music we brought out a (second) choral CD 'Welcome stranger' just last year (Phaedra label). Posman was a composition student of Coryn. Reasons enough for us also to include music by Posman in our presentation concert and thus to bring attention to both our new CDs. Both artists will be present at the concert to talk about their work.

Jutta TrochWednesday 19th December 2012 at 20:00 : BETWEEN HEAVEN AND EARTH – Christmas music for female chorus and harp

Organization: CC De Borre , Bierbeek

Place: Sint Hilariuskerk, Dorpsstraat 26, 3360 Bierbeek

Everyone harbours a desire for the higher things in life. Out of this desire art is born. And religion. And love. We create gods. We imagine for ourselves an (earthly) paradise. We call music heavenly. Many people pray. It’s busy between heaven and earth. Everything comes together in one Christmas concert: the mystery of belief, music from paradise and oh, such earthly, sensual women’s voices. A way to reach seventh heaven…

In this Christmas concert AQUARIUS interprets music by Gustav Holst, James MacMillan, Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, Zoltan Kodaly, Lucien Posman and Benjamin Britten. The harpist is JUTTA TROCH.
